Bara birth ("speckled bread") is traditional Welsh tea bread enriched with dried fruit. It is made with raisins, currents and candied peel. It was traditionally eaten on St. David's Day or Christmas, in thick slices spread with butter. The name Bara birth was originally used in North Wales only. In the south the name Teisen dorth was used (teisen means cake and dorth/torth is a loaf).
